Cabrillo Crushers Summer Travel Team Information

Who are the Cabrillo Crushers?
The Cabrillo Crushers are summer league tournament travel ball teams playing ASA Junior Olympic fast-pitch softball. All Crushers teams are registered with the Amateur Softball Association Junior Olympic (ASA) program. ASA JO is designed to create a safe and satisfying sports experience for youths 18 and under. ASA JO program focuses on the finer points of sports, such as friendship, learning new skills, having fun, and building inner confidence within themselves.

Who can tryout and when are the tryouts for Cabrillo Crushers?
All girls in the Cabrillo Gals recreation league are eligible to try out for the tournament travel ball teams. Crushers will have teams represented in 8U, 10U, 12U, 14U and 16U. Tryouts and team selection occur within the first week of May. Once the teams have been selected there will be Sunday practices planned until the end of the regular season. Once the season ends, there will be practices 2 to 3 days per week.

What is important to know as a parent about competitive league play?
At the competitive level not everyone who tries out is selected for the team, and some who are selected spend some of their time on "the bench". Your daughter may be a star on her recreational league team but has now joined a team full of stars. It is important to recognize that it is not a goal of Crushers to evenly distribute playing opportunities among the players. Each player is on her team only because she is a skilled softball player.

What is the family commitment when your daughter is selected for a Crushers team?
Competitive softball is extremely rewarding and lots of fun. Girls stay fit and form lasting friendships as they compete. However, it requires a large commitment for the entire family and should not be entered lightly. The time and financial requirements are high, and the travel schedule requires sacrifices by the entire family. Your family will be committing to stay in Hotels and watch softball games all day nearly every other weekend of June and July, plus 4-8 hours of practices each week. Crushers’ do sponsor a home tournament at Anna Jean Cummings Park in July. As this is a major fundraiser for our Crushers program you will be expected to volunteer your time to assist with operating the tournament.

What is the cost for your daughter to play on a Crushers team?
The fees for the competitive tournament players are based on the number of tournaments that each team is planning to enter and what equipment and uniforms are needed. The cost ranges from $300 to $500 per player. In addition, there are travel and lodging expenses for any tournaments played outside of the area.
